Dear Omigiri, today's ceremony of my official recognition as a Doctor of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Western Attica, may alienate many, who will wonder how a Cleric, and even a Bishop, decided to deal scientifically with Medical issues and even prepare a relevant doctoral thesis. The prejudiced, Nevertheless, study of historical and scientific data proves that Church and Medicine are fields that complement each other and not cancel each other out.

Nowadays, after all, more and more scientists, researchers and health workers agree that health is based on a balance, based on psychics, environmental, social but also cultural factors, among which the religious holds a special place.

Homer, in fact, in the lyrics 32-34 of the First Rhapsody of the Odyssey, presents Zeus making the following findings:

“Ὢ people, who says that the gods are the cause.
From among us, there is nothing left, but they too
They have a problem with their child…»

(Alas, it is true to wonder that mortals want to cast their burdens on the gods; they say evil comes from us—and yet they themselves, and through their own fault,
they suffer and are tortured, and above their writing..)

Hence the achievement of health, as is widely believed, most, it is based on the harmonious cooperation of each person with his environment, in order to achieve his physical and mental well-being. This expanded understanding of health, it should necessarily include a Life Plan, a healthy religiosity, which gives meaning to human existence and secures it against despair and chaos on the one hand, but also religious mania on the other hand.

Such a plan of life is offered by the Church today, helping the modern man to show a balanced love for himself and others and to go through life giving meaning to health and ensuring his life from the threats of death and all forms of nullification that arise around him.

As can be deduced from the findings of our thesis, the first "Ministry" of Health and Social Care in World History is the Church of Christ, Who clearly emphasized that in the face of the sick and suffering fellow human being he will measure our holiness, as our offering to him is an offering to Himself!

That is why our Church did not become only a hospital for souls, but also a body clinic. From 451 A.D. by Synod decision the Hospital is defined as an annex of the Temple, while in Byzantium the Hospitals were attached to the Monasteries. In the capital and reigning City of Constantine they operated 40 Hospitals-Monasteries during the dark years of the Turkish occupation 13!

Let's note, in fact, because in the Holy Book of our Church a 20-member Choir of Anargyrian Physicians is recorded, with Saints Cosmas and Damianos leading, who mark the timeless duty of the doctor towards society, like Hippocrates had described.

And it couldn't be otherwise, after, "There is no benefit to all good things, if they heal it from, according to Lucian. Simply put, there is no benefit, if we have all the goods and health is absent! Justified, Consequently, and the price due to the doctors, because, according to the Old Testament and the assurance of the inspired author of Sophia Sirach, "Honored physician to his needs, honored him, and for this the Lord created, rather than for the Most High, there is healing. Let the physician lift up his head, and against magnates he is admired"(S.Sir.38,1-3). Let's perform, that is, to the doctor the prices, where they belong, because the Lord has appointed him to his function, as all healing comes from the Lord! Medical science will give prestige and prestige to the doctor, who will be admired in this way even in front of the magnates.
End, We also find a wonderful example of the respect owed to doctors in the Iliad, where Homer declares himself "a physician worthy of many others" (Λ,514).

In the Iliad, in fact, Homer records the names of the first doctors in history, Podalirio and Mahaon, where they were sons of Asklepios.

Herodotus, the father of history (484-426 e.g.) also mentions breast cancer, from whom Atossa suffered, mother of the Persian king Darius, and from whom the Greek physician Demokides cured her.

This achievement of your ancient colleague had the consequence that he became sought after and his wages became extremely high.

They mention this successful treatment, apart from Herodotus and the writers Athenaios, Aelianos, Iamblichus and Pliny.

I'll go over my point, ἀφοῦ συγχαρῶ ἐγκαρδίως τούς σύν ἐμοί ἀναγορευομένους διδάκτορες, θά ἤθελα νά εὐχαριστήσω ἐν πρώτοις τόν Ἐλλογιμώτατο Πρύτανι τοῦ Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικἠς Αττικῆς, K. Thanks, also, his cousin Mr. Francis Haniotis, who, by a lucky coincidence, takes his name today, excellent doctor of the Medical School of the University of Athens, with many years of important university education, writing and administrative experience in many positions of responsibility, with broad social action and selfless contribution to fellow human beings, where he enjoys, together with his brother of general esteem in their native island of Serifos.

Literally, as well, I thank the Most Reverend Archpriest Clergy of our Holy Metropolis Aristomeni Matsanga, Theologian-Psychiatrist, for his valuable help in the research of the sources, and the Secretary of the Holy Metropolis, philologist Mr. Alexandros Marquizos, for editing the text, as well as those accompanying me, Honorable Professor of the Department of Social Theology and Religion of the University of Athens Emmanuel Karageorgoudis and the High Priestly Commissioner of Tinos, Αιδεσιμολ. Protopr. Georgios Fanero.

Thanks to all of you too, that you honor me with your presence and I hope that the Lord will protect me, supports and blesses the medical family without fail, so that she can fulfill her God-given role, to provide, that is, to all the "kingdom", queen of everything, the "polyophthalmic", power, where it comes to life, and "ferolbio", which brings happiness, health, especially in today's age, in which medicine and its practitioners face many risks, difficulties and challenges in accomplishing their mission.
