“Nikolici, Barvaritsi,
Savva, you wanted it in the middle;”
Savva, you wanted it in the middle;”
Second in line and lesser known (the above proverb is said, naturally, in the sense “what are the little ones doing among the big ones?;”), between the legendary and sea-loving Ai-Nicolas ( and of the patron Saint Barbara ), Agios Savvas is celebrated. It's about the so-called “Nicolovarvara”, three big ones………
holidays, in the month of December, to welcome winter.
Lots of beliefs, proverbs and customs of our people, related to these dates, which usually correspond to the first colds, in the first frosts and snowfalls, so they were significant for the rural man, the man who fought daily with the elements of nature, which literally experienced the changes of climate and seasons.
These saints are so connected with the coming of winter, that many related proverbs were created by our people:
“Winter begins from Nikolovarvara!”
“T'ai-Nikolovarvara and the walls were stripped of wood!”
“Nikolitsa, Barvaritsa back and forth in winter.”
“Ai Nikolovarvara makes water and snow!”
“Agia Varvara spoke and Savvas was simple:
Collect wood and scraps and drag them to the mill as well
what Agios Nikolas comes loaded with snow!”
“Saint Barbara gave birth and Saint Savvas accepted it
and Saint Nicholas ran to baptize it” (the snow)
“The Nikolovarvara descents and snow,
tolls and tolls!”
“The Nikolobarbaras are in the stable!”
At 5 December, Well, we celebrate Holy Saturday, on Holy Saturday which “shrouds” as he says his name:
“Saint Barbara is barbarizing,
Ai-Savvas shrouds
and Ai-Nicolas gives birth.”
Although these lyrics, they basically refer to snow, there is also
the version that Saint Savvas shrouds the dead and tries to
give one “better position” in the Underworld, while, on the other hand, he tries
to remove death from the living, as patron saint and
therapist. On this day, in some areas, they use to make
fava beans in his memory, as the popular couplet also records:

“Of Saint Savva,
they eat fava beans!”
Reported by Vasilis Lamnatos in his book “The months in the rural and pastoral life of our people”:
“The day after the feast of Saint Barbara, it's the celebration
of Agios Sabvas on 5 of December and the following day his feast day
Agios Nikolaos on 6 of the month. That's why the people tell us how:
of Agios Sabvas on 5 of December and the following day his feast day
Agios Nikolaos on 6 of the month. That's why the people tell us how:
“Saint Barbara gave birth to Savva and Saint Nicholas”,
and still
“Saint Barbara spoke and Savvas answered and Saint Nicholas arrived laden with snow”
the
“Saint Barbara is barbarizing, St. Savvas shrouds and St. Nicholas gives birth.”
All three of these holidays, where they come with the first days of December, our people call them by one name: “Nicolovarvara”. “Nikolovarvara back and forth, it snows Tartara”,
say our aliens. The Tartars here have the grace of giving,
but our people put that word (Tartars) to give more emphasis
in the freezing cold of December.”

Now, if we expect cold and snow, but we don't see them, these
the days, it does not mean that the opinions of our people, based on
centuries of observation and experience, dropped out or are incorrect, just in
our time, as“played it” Human, “played it” and the weather… What is this virgin Plasi to do as much as she does to us who have been yelling at her…!
