The life of the most recognizable monk of recent years
Saint Paisios the Saint, born Arsenios Eznepidis - born in July 1924 in Farasa in Cappadocia and "left" in July 1994- was a Greek monk who became widely known for his life and work. His father's name was Prodromos, he was president of Faras, and his mother Evlambia. He still had 8 siblings. At 7 August of 1924, a week before the Pharasians left for Greece, he was baptized by the parish priest Arsenio, whom the Orthodox Church recognized as a saint. Arsenius insisted and gave him his own name "to leave a monk at his feet", as he had said.
Five weeks after the baptism of then little Arsenios, at 14 September of 1924 the Eznepid family, along with the other refugees, arrived at Agios Georgios in Piraeus and then went to Corfu. There, the family members stayed for a year and a half. Then they went to Igoumenitsa and ended up in Konitsa, where Arsenios finished elementary school and graduated with "excellent conduct". Since childhood, not, noted the miracles of Agios Arsenios. He had a particular inclination towards monasticism and wished to become a monk.
Arsenios entered to monasticism on Mount Athos 1949, immediately after his discharge from the army, but returned to secularism for one more year, in order to restore his sisters, and returned to the holy abode. He stayed for one night at the Monastery of Agios Ioannou the Theologian in Karyes and then settled in the hermitage of Agios Panteleimonos, in the cell of the Entrances of the Virgin, where he met Father Cyril, abbot of the monastery, and followed him faithfully. After several "wanderings" in various hermitages on Mount Athos and in Sinai, moved to Koutloumousiou Monastery.
He was buried in the Holy Sanctuary of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, Thessaloniki. Since, every year on 11 to 12 July, on the anniversary of his falling asleep, a vigil is held in the Holy Sanctuary, with the participation of thousands of believers.
