The work of the 10th European Meeting with Religious Leaders, held on the 13th floor in the "ORTOLI" room in the Berlaymont building under the Chairmanship of the President of the European Commission and. Jose Manuel Barroso….
They took part in the meeting, o Director of the Office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Brussels Rev. Matr. of France Mr. Emmanuel, the Director of the Office of the Church of Cyprus Theophilastos Bishop of Neapolis, Mr. Porphyry, of the Roman Catholic Church, of the Evangelicals, of Protestants, Rabbis, Muslims and Hindus.
The Church of Greece was represented by Rev. K. Dorotheos II, as a regular member of the Special Synodal Committee on European Affairs.
The President of the Meeting Mr. Barroso addressing the Representatives who took part, he said, including, and the following:
«…today we have strong ties…the Europe of 28 United and strong member states will move into the future with confidence in our values that we must defend such as peace and democracy…it is a common duty to listen to citizens…our priorities should be unemployment and social inequality… the Churches play an important role in trying to mitigate the crisis…religion can play a role in reconciling peoples…her effort for peace in society was not just a contribution but an essential event."
He even considered the meetings held on 10 and for many years an essential event and he wished the new heads of the institutional European bodies to continue the dialogue, according to the article 17 of the Treaty of Lisbon.
European Council President Herman van Robay said, including: «…the cost of "non-Europe" is enormous…our house was in a storm, but he was saved for the sake of his soul…the soul has to do with man.
Man is the cornerstone of the European ideal. Residents of European countries are not just citizens, they are also human and want justice and goodness. Human dignity and love are values that transcend this debate.". And he himself wished that these meetings, which he called "democracy of dialogue", would continue.
Afterwards, all those present took the floor and spoke on the theme of the meeting regarding current social developments, inside and outside the European Union, Europe's role in the world, but also the role that religions can play in the future of Europe itself.
After the meeting was held by the two Presidents and the Vice-President of the European Parliament Laszlo Surjan, representing President Martin Schultz, presence of the representatives of the Religious Leaders, press conference in the press room, at the beginning of which President Barroso announced a text, which all participants signed, with a warning to the Government of Sudan for the immediate release of Mariam Yahya Ibrahim Isag and for not implementing the relevant legislation for her execution, event for which on 16 May and His Beatitude Archbishop Mr. Hieronymus II appealed to the international community.
Mr.. Barroso also announced that before the start of the work of the Meeting a minute's silence was observed in memory of the four murdered Jews at the Jewish Museum in Brussels.
