Our forty students, with a direct flight from Mykonos they arrived in
Rome and had the opportunity to admire the city-museum with the
famous walls of Marcus Aurelius, Venice Square, the Palace
Vittoriano who is also the unknown soldier of Italy, the Palace
Venice, the Capitol, the ancient Roman market, the hippodrome, him
Palatine Hill, the Arch of Constantine the Great and the Colosseum,
the largest surviving ancient Roman amphitheater in the world, built
in 1 AD. century.
On the second day of our stay in the Eternal City, we visited them
catacombs of Agia Domitilla, of the most extensive in Rome, where
include a semi-subterranean royal church and 17 kilometers from
underground galleries and corridors.
The emotion was evident in the eyes of our children when after the
tour, ο π. Peter sang the absolution of the Holy Martyrs and of
All Saints.
Then we were guided to the independent state of the Vatican and
we visited its Museums, which have exhibits from the past
and vast collection of the Roman Catholic Church, among which
famous statues of the ancient world and its masterpieces
Renaissance.
In the Sistine Chapel, the chapel of the Pope's official residence,
painted entirely with frescoes by great artists, with
more importantly him Michelangelo, who designed its legendary ceiling.
We visited St. Peter's Basilica, one of the largest churches in the world, as well as its square.
The next day we left for the Tuscany region. First off
destination Florence, which is considered the birthplace of Italian
Renaissance.
We visited the Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore (Duomo), in
Piazza San Giovanni, with Brunelleschi's famous dome and the
Baptistery of Agios Ioannis.
The interior of the Temple is decorated with statues, sculptures and murals
of Michael Angelo, of Giotto, of Ghiberti and other greats
sculptures.
Immediately after we visited the Uffizi Palace which houses one of the
oldest museums-galleries in the world, and we admired the Ponte Bridge
Vecchio, the oldest and most famous bridge of the river Arno, with the
houses and shops that seem to float above the river.
Then we visited Siena, the most beautiful medieval city in Italy.
We visited Campo, the central square of the city, which revives
every year the Palio, the custom of the famous horse races and we admired it
magnificent Palace (Palace) Public.
The next day we visited Orte (60 km. north of Rome), a
medieval city located in the Tiber valley, and in the afternoon
of our last stay we toured its illuminated buildings
of Rome.
On the afternoon of July 3rd with a direct flight from Rome, we are back
at Mykonos. At Mykonos airport, the parents of our children
they waited with expressions of love and admiration, expressing the multiples
their thanks to our Catechists and especially to
Our Most Reverend Metropolitan Mr. Dorotheo for his unflinching interest
for the youth, wishing you a good summer and a good recovery
autumn.
